Blogger vs. LiveJournal
Note to self and others: Blogger's nicer than LiveJournal.
I was telling Irina and a couple of others today that I want to start a blog to record my experiences with the class I'm taking (not teaching, *taking*) this summer, but I don't really want it to be out there for the whole world to see. On the other hand, I want it to look pretty (the way blogs just naturally look pretty to me!), and I want to be able to search through my own posts, make links to articles, etc. that could be useful to my coursework, and so on.
So I started a LiveJournal account, where you can make your postings totally private. Or you can make them readable only to people you designate. Cool. But way harder than Blogger to get started on.
And dammit, the templates just aren't as pretty.

Hi M.--
Yes, it's livejournal.com. If you want people to be able to read it, you just add them as "friends," and then they can log onto your livejournal site and read ONLY the stuff you want them to read.
Your question "why don't you want it all to be accessible" is a good one! I guess the answer is that, even though I'm a teacher and student of writing, even though I write a lot, even though I extol the virtues of writing...I'm still very self-conscious about my own work! I just don't want people seeing all the crappy first drafts (to use a phrase that one of my favorite writing teachers uses) that I produce. And there are a LOT of crappy first drafts. And crappy second drafts. And so on.
Plus, there's just the whole thing about writing and publishing and responsibility. I might want to bitch in my journal about something that's bothering me about the class I'm taking, and I *really* don't want people to see that!
